How to Ward Off Insects This Summer!

Nothing can ruin your summer fun quicker than coming back inside full of bug bites! Wouldn’t it be great if there were natural ways to suppress their presence in your backyard?

Well you can!

Here are six methods that you can try out, the best part is, most of them don’t cost you any extra money.

  • Add a patio fan- Outdoor ceiling fans not only help keep you cool in the summer, but also help to keep pests away such as flies and mosquitoes. These insects do not stand up well to strong winds.

  • Get rid of standing water- Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Bird baths should be changed every few days. You also never want to forget about checking household items such as old flowerpots, wheelbarrows, or buckets that may have been left behind around your yard.

  • Keep your yard tidy- Tall grasses can harbor ticks, trees and bushes that are close to your home also provide easy access for pests to come inside. Keep the bugs at bay by having a well-manicured lawn all summer long.

  • Clean your gutters- Regular upkeep on your gutters can help keep pests away from your yard and home. Full and/or dirty gutters provide free room and board and a steady source of food and water for pests like mosquitos, ants, and earwigs.

  • Add some patio plants- Using plants to repel bugs is a natural solution that can add beauty to your outdoor space. However, you will need to research specific plants depending on what insects you are trying to repel.

  • Try natural repellants – Essential oils can also aid in keeping insects away. Citronella, lemongrass, sweet orange, peppermint, and lavender are just a few of the oils that are known to help repel summer bugs.

We hope these tips are helpful to you and can’t wait to have you back here next month for more landscaping tips!
